The end of the game season on the Hampshire Avon is now upon us and the long, dark winter months lay ahead of all who enjoy fishing for the seasonal visitors to the Royalty Fishery until we can once again pick up a fly rod next February. It has definitely been a season of contrasts, with the salmon fishing once again being tough, particularly for the Spring fish which the river is so famous for, although the grilse did at least appear in greater numbers than last season. The largest salmon recorded was approximately 18lbs and two anglers landed fish of this size, Jeff Godfrey and Andrew Dunk. Andrew also had the most salmon with a total of seven. After last years dreadful lack of salmon in the Parlour it was comforting to see that the work to neck in the width of the lower area of the Pool and balance the flows between the Parlour, Great and Little Weirs seems to have worked as, despite even lower Summer flow rates, a fair number of fish made their way through the Parlour rather than just all running up Trammels straight to the Great Weir. Indeed a third of the salmon taken this season came from the Parlour.

The sea trout fishing has however been the best for a number of seasons with almost 4,000 now recorded by those anglers who have so far made a catch return, the majority being caught from the Bridge Pool, although there have also been plenty landed by anglers fishing the main river and the Great Weir. Catches from the Bridge Pool have been consistently good with up to 60 sea trout in a session being recorded and a fair number taken on the fly. The largest sea trout recorded was 8lb 2oz and was caught from the Pipes by John Stack.
