Royalty Fishery Report - January 2011

Guest Author Dave Basher

With the arrival of January came rather predictably some very cold weather which slowed the Barbel fishing down a fair bit, those however that ventured out on the slightly milder days however did have some reasonable success. A fair few of the smaller Royalty residents in the 3 to 8lb bracket were caught and the odd hefty specimen as well to those that persevered. John Stack had 5 small Barbel and two in the 8lb bracket fishing short sessions around the Green banks area of the fishery, and even managed a 4lb salmon on his favoured rolled meat attack.

Having mentioned Salmon, there was a 15lb cock fish caught on meat but unfortunately there is no further information available for this capture.

Gareth Boycott fished Nelsons for 3 small Barbel up to 5lb8oz and a 5lb 2oz chub; nice days sport for the time of year, Again the favoured approach was the Trusty meat. There was a few Chub caught through January with Richard Booty and Andy Johnson amongst others capitalising on the lesser sought after Royalty species. Andy bagged a nice Barbel as well on stinking cheese bait in the Boat house.

Royalty regular Ken Thompson ventured out a bit and was rewarded with a few fish as well, He bagged 4 Barbel to 7lb on one session on the Trammels and a hard fighting 9lb 8oz from the stump. Ken actually fined down and used a maggot feeder for his success.

Gary (The Garlic) Porter had a great days sport catching 3smaller ones to 8lb and a superb Barbel just an ounce shy of 12lb on his secretly scented luncheon meat.

Having produced consistently all summer and autumn it is of no surprise that Greenbanks produced the biggest specimen of the month and weighing in at 14lb what a cracking fish for Royalty regular Kevin Attwood !

There was quite a few double figure Pike caught through January from all the usual spots, little weir, Railway, House pool etc mostly to dead baits as it was quite difficult to catch a live bait. The largest reported was a 17lb 4oz caught by Ben Davis.
