Throop Report - Opening Day 2011

Hello and welcome to the Davis Tackle Website.

Well i hope all you river anglers had a nice rest, but for those who had the opportunity to get some decorating and many chores done during the river close season, i hope that it was very successful.
A few hours before the start of the season it was great to meet up with many of the lads to enjoy a beer and a barbecue at School Bridge, in fact about 14 people turned up, so with two small barbecue's that were borrowed from Rick Willson and Peter Hilken, and with the help of my wife Tina, who was rail-roaded in to do the cooking, we had a very nice few hours, so about 36 sausages later, plus a few frozen solid burgers that Russ managed to prise out of his freezer, it was time time for some of the lads to make their way to their chosen swims to the one off special midnight start, the rest of the sensible people made their way home for an early morning start, i decided to start fishing at about 2.30pm, but what went wrong ? ............The old excuses have again started, the fishing was very difficult, the conditions were waiting for the start of the season, it was almost none stop rain and high winds, the rising water was also washing some weed downstream and fish were very hard to come by, i managed 6 hours without a bite, choosing to fish a very deep swim of about 10 feet.

Scott Mosley had a good session fishing a deeper swim upstream catching about 5 Chub the two best weighing in at 6lb 2ozs and 6lb 9ozs, Eddy Widdup took 4 Chub of average size which is around the 5lb mark, other anglers were taking just one or two chub, with one lad taking a nice fish of 6lb 4ozs, so with many anglers blanking in the rotten conditions, it was very well done to the angler who landed a cracking Barbel of 13lb on his only bite of the day, this angler does wish to remain anonymous, i did see his photo, and the fish was in lovely condition, well done mate.
So with such a poor start, it was nice for Throop to take the biggest Barbel of the day, beating The Royalty into second place , their fish was 11lb 11oz, but I'm sure it wont be long for them to come storming back.

The weather forecast for the weekend is pretty grim, but it's great to be back out on the banks again.

Good luck for the rest of the season, again if you require any river conditions, phone me on 07740777967.

Brian Willson Throop Bailiff.
