Sea Fishing Predictions - February 2013

E-mail Print

SHORE: Abbotsbury, West Bexington and Cogden for whiting, dab and some coalfish by day and dogfish at night. Marks east of West Bay for flounder whilst the Bridging Camp on Chesil Beach is your best chance for codling. The gully along the bottom of the shingle at Ferrybridge can produce an odd big conger. Warbarrow Bay on the Isle of Purbeck for the occasional bass and the odd big pollack. Swanage beach for dab and flounder. Weymouth harbour for flounder and a few pollack. Deep marks around Portland will still hold wrasse unless there's a prolonged cold spell. The lower reaches of Poole harbour can fish extremely well for specimen flounder. Marks at Evening Hill, Baiter Point, Holes Bay, Hamworthy and Rocky Sands are all target areas but Jerry's and Gravel Point are the best bet for the chance of a 3lb fish. Ragworm is the successful bait, peeler crab is also useful if you can get it. Also expect the odd coalfish in the harbour entrance. Bournemouth beaches for whiting, small flounder and dab with the Pier also showing dab. Highcliffe, Avon beach and Friar's Cliff for pouting, rockling and a few whiting at night.

BOAT: Lyme Regis for whiting and cod. Wreck fishing from West Bay should be excellent for pollack and cod if you get the chance to anchor and fish a whole squid. Whiting and a few cod show on the inshore marks. If the sprat shoals are about try mounting one on a long flowing trace and working it artificial eel style for pollack, mackerel, cod and whiting. Good catches of whiting for Weymouth boats on the Adamant Bank and marks west of Portland. Blonde ray likely from the eastern side ground and Kidney Bank. Cod and bull huss on the reefs south of the Shambles Bank and mixed bags on the many inshore marks. Pollack and ling from the mid-channel marks. Poole harbour will offer excellent sport for flounder with some whiting on the Dolphin Bank and cod from deep water off Swanage. Good pollack off the Purbecks. A few rays are also likely when cod fishing. If the weather permits the English Channel wrecks will begin to fish well for ling and pollack.
